Gamescom 2010 Day 3 - Castlevania dated, still no PSP2?Gamescom is in the process of wrapping up, and the final bits of news have been steadily flowing from the event. Firstly, two of our most anticipated games have been dated, with the brilliant Portal 2 being set for February 9th release date and Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow making its way to us in a few short months on October 7th. “There was a lot of scepticism about Metroid Prime with a lot of people thinking it wasn’t going to work,” producer Dave Cox told NowGamer. “I’ve always believed a 3D Castlevania was possible.” Talking to Kotaku about previous 3D Castlevanias, Cox said, “For me, one of the key things that went wrong with those games is that they tried to emulate the 2D gameplay in 3D. We haven’t tried to do that. We pretty much designed from the ground up as a 3D game. That meant making decisions about deign that meant we would see new things in Castlevania that we haven’t seen before. We’ve been brave enough to do that.”

Konami also dated Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 for October 8th – just one week after FIFA 11′s debut. It’s a brave move in that it gives its rival a weeklong headstart to get a foothold in the market. Dangerous indeed. It’ll be an interesting battle to see which series comes out on top this year, with both football franchises trying out some interesting new ideas. Konami’s European team leader Jon Murphy told NowGamer that “dumbing down PES [in the past] was a mistake.”

“The belief was that when we got to a certain level with PES we could kick on and become not just a gamers’ game, but we can be a family game or something like that,” admitted Murphy. “I think that was damaging.”

In other software news, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot discussed Beyond Good & Evil 2 with Kotaku, stating that work on the sequel has never stopped, and the team is continually working on it. “We are working on the game,” said Guillemot. “What is very important with this next product is that it will be perfect. Michael Ancel’s intention is to come [out] with something really exciting. But everybody needs a little bit of patience.” Guillemot went on to discuss Ubisoft’s mixed feelings to the first game and its lacklustre sales, saying, “I would say the game was very well appreciated by the people who played it. But we didn’t have enough people when it was launched. After its time it became a very recognised product.”

Interestingly, despite persistent rumours across the net, there is still no sign of Sony’s PSP2 at Gamescom, even though many developers previously admitted to recently signing PSP-related NDAs. During the press event earlier this week Sony’s emphasis was on the current PSP hardware, with a skew towards a younger audience. “They seem eerily complacent about the device, which, as we all know, is not selling well,” analyst Michael Pachter told MCV. Sony, meanwhile, is insistent on its position that there is life in the handheld device yet. “We don’t have anything to announce and nor are we giving anything away if we say we’re always looking at the future as well,” said Michael Denny, senior vice president of Worldwide Studios Europe. “For now, we’re still concentrating on the PSP as a very attractive proposition.”

However, according to Eurogamer a new PSP has been show to various development sources – one that is approximately the same size as the PSP-3000, but includes a touch-sensitive area on the back of the unit behind the screen. Apparently, Sony is currently showcasing the unfinished handheld to publishers and has already settled on its business model. However, no mention has been made of the device whatsoever at Gamescom up to this point.

Gamescom 2010 Day 3 - Castlevania dated, still no PSP2?Sony has, however, revealed that the catch-up TV service ITV Player will be joining the BBC iPlayer on its PSN service this October. It will be the first commercial catch-up TV service on the PS3, and will be free to users. Sony’s new film-streaming service, MUBI, will be available in 18 countries from October, which will include a forum for film fans, community features and a social network, where fans can rate and discuss films.

Microsoft has issued an official response to the Day 1 Gamescom news that Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3, giving PlayStation owners the chance to experience the game for the first time. “With both Mass Effect titles launching first on Xbox 360 combined with the wealth of available paid download content on Xbox Live today, Xbox 360 remains the best place to experience the Mass Effect franchise,” a Microsoft statement given to IGN read. “And the original Mass Effect is absolutely an Xbox 360 exclusive, making Xbox 360 the only place the get the full Mass Effect experience.” However, EA has since confirmed that the PS3 version will also include all of the digital content released on Xbox Live since the game’s release in January.

In other interesting EA/Microsoft news, EA has stated that is has “nothing to announce right now” following its no-show on the 63-game launch line-up for Microsoft’s Window Phone 7. Mobile-ent.biz contacted the developer, who simply responded, “We are constantly evaluating new platforms and opportunities, but have nothing to announce right now.”

And that’s that. Keep an eye on gamestm.co.uk and NowGamer.com to stay updated on any more announcements to come from the show before the end of the day.
